McLaren GT Preview

McLaren has teased a shadowy, darkly lit video and single still image of their new GT. Perhaps, with some image manipulation, we can tease a few more details than they intended for us to see.

McLaren GT Side View

From the side we can easily see the front splitter, a low sloping nose and headlights vaguely similar to an Aston-Martin DB9 or, dare we suggest, 2020 Hyundai Sonata. The front cutline for the door pushed almost to the wheel well indicates the forward seating position that the mid-rear engine layout allows and suggests room for luggage behind the seats. The sloping roofline aft of the apex suggests this won’t be a true four-seater but a 2+2 is theoretically possible. The wheels, with a large number of spokes, are similar to those used on the 570GT.

McLaren GT Front View

From the front we see the traditional McLaren headlight shape. Cutlines for the deck lid are as expected but there appears to be rectangular indention for unknown reasons. Interior accommodations are hinted at but little detail is visible. Side mirrors appear to be large and on stalks long enough to allow sight lines that clear the rear bodywork.

McLaren GT Inlet

The inlet just aft of the door shows a zone of intersecting cut lines, indicating where the engine (or possibly luggage) cover may open up.

McLaren GT Rear View

The most detailed view is from the rear. The rear window appears large to offer good visibility. Cutlines on the rear deck are visible, probably for engine access. Access to the rear passenger compartment for storing luggage seems like it would be a requirement in a true GT but if it opens up, perhaps through the rear glass similarly to the 570GT, lift over would seem to be substantial. Grillwork is visible around the tail lights and, if you squint a bit, above and below the bumper outboard of the exhaust pipes. The backup camera is clearly visible above the license plate, as are hints of underside mechanisms.

The McLaren GT premiers on May 15, 2019.
